My experience of Urethrostomy or O.I.U For Urethral Stricture

Alright! so here i going to share my experience and feedback of Urethrostomy or O.I.U (Optical Internal Urethrotomy) or laser operation which i had in mid of 2013.

After realization that there is something wrong with my urine flow i keep quiet for a very long and keep hoping that it will be fine automatically after some time or it is temporary problem, but my urine flow keep decreasing day by day and with decreasing urine flow burning after urine and a lot of irritation became very common for me, those was my school days and i was quite young at that time, i keep tolerating the structure for a very long and after tolerating if for more than one and half year i visited a local doctor near to my home, and after that i met dozens of different doctors and got thousands of suggestions, i will share the complete story with you but not in this post else it will become very lengthy, so my main point is that i have taken thousands of suggestions and finally my urethral stricture got detected and i was suggested to have a laser operation (Urethrostomy) in 2013 and i went through it in mid of the year.

For my laser operation i opted a private hospital ( R.G Stone Hospital, Delhi, Pitampura Branch) where i feel satisfaction and the hospital was quite nice, initially i did consultation in that hospital where the doctor suggested me the same (Urethrostomy) and after my consultation i went through the operation just next day.

The whole operation procedure was around 45 minutes and they give me the anesthesia 5 minutes back starting the operation, after the surgery i was hospitalized for next 3 days and then just after the surgery they put the catheter bag which remain there for next 7 days, and i visited the hospital 7th day to remove the catheter bag, i was very happy at that time and i was feeling that now i will be fine and my urine flow will be fine, i can not express the feeling which i was having that time,a nurse came in my room and remove the catheter bag easily and smoothly, i feel relaxed once it was removed and she asked to my drink some water so that i can have my first urine though which they can judge that my surgery is successful or not, so i drink around 1 litre of water and had my first urine, my flow was 150% than usual, and there was no retention and no burning, even i never dad this much of flow before, so i was completely satisfied and happy with the surgery, i met the doctor after the first urine flow and he recommended me some antibiotic medicines for some days and some anti UTI medicines for around 20 days and call me after a month for routine checkup and uroflowmetry.

My urine flow remain above 100% for the whole month and my uroflowmetry result was also fine, even i was not taking any medicine that time, so overall it was a nice till then, but after few months around 3-4 months later my surgery i realize that my urine flow is going down again and it keeps going down, then i met the doctor again, and tell him the situation, after 6 months of urethrostomy it was confirmed that my Urethral Stricture is back and now the doctor suggestion me doing self catheterization he send me the OT again where i learn how to do the self catheterization, in the OT doctor teach me how i can do the self catheterization, initially he did it by himself for one time and then asked me to try myself, i did it 2 times and then doctor asked me to do it for next 1 month on regular daily basis.

I keep doing it for a month on regular basis and met the doctor again after a month, then he asked me to increase the gap from daily to 3 times in a week and gradually increase it to 2 times in a week and then once in a week, so i keep doing the self catheterization for around 3-4 months and then i did it once in a week for a very long, around next 3-4 months, but i was feeling that the catheter is now not going easily and stucking in between and now i need to put some pressure to put it inside.

After 1 years of my Urethrostomy, the catheter stop going inside and now it was stucking where i was having the stricture, my urine flow was around 20-30% at that time and doctor advised me to have an open surgery (Urethroplasty) and i went through the urethroplasty in 2013, i am keeping this post short so that you can ready it quickly, but still if you have anything to ask then feel free.

So this was my experience about urethrostomy or O.I.U, i will also share my experience on other preceduce and surgeries which i have gone through in other post.

Below are some points about Urethrostomy.

  • Urethrostomy is not 100% successful for Urethral Stricture and there is a higher chances that your stricture may be back after Urethrostomy, if you are having very small stricture and it may be successfully for you and there are some people in our group who went through Urethrostomy many years back and till now they are fine, but the chances are rare to get relief from it.
  • Urethrostomy is the initial and first step surgery for every urethral stricture patience and usually every doctor suggested urethrostomy.
  • Urethrostomy is not a really painful surgery, and it required around 7-10 days bed rest, after that you will be perfectly fine for morning walk :-)
  • Urethrostomy may cost you around 25k-50k in major private hospitals in India.
  • Do not much expected from Urethrostomy but initially you can try it before went through any open surgery.
Forgive me if i missed to share something, do let me know what i missed in comments or in whatsapp group and i will definitely add it.

Below is the details of the doctor from where i took the Urethrostomy

Dr.Harbans Singh.
RG Stone Urology & Laparoscopy Hospital
194-195, Deepali Chowk, Pitam Pura, New Delhi, Delhi 110034
Phone: 011 7105 7000

It cost me around 35k Indian Currency.

I am quite happy with Dr. Harbans Singh, he is very senior and experience in his field and specialized for urological surgeries, his nature is very calm, he understand me very carefully and suggested me all the precaution also he did his 100% for both of the surgeries (later i also had Urethroplasty through him), unfortunately the nature of my urethral stricture is recurring due to which it come back again and again, but as the doctor i must say the Dr.Harbans Singh is great and if you are planning to have any kind of urological treatment then you may consult him.

Apart from Dr.Harbans Singh i also met dozens of doctors and took various suggestions and consultations.
